Pierwszy zabieg powiększenia piersi implantami silikonowymi został wykonany w 1963. W 1964 francuska firma Laboratoires Arion wyprodukowała pierwsze protezy piersiowe wypełnione solą fizjologiczną. Obecnie powszechnie stosowane są implanty wypełnione solą fizjologiczną oraz implanty wypełnione żelem silikonowym czwartej i piątej generacji.
